In low-risk Myelodysplastic Neoplasms (MDS), increased activity of apoptosis-promoting factors such as tumor necrosis factor (TNFα) and pro-apoptotic Fas ligand (CD95L) have been described as possible pathomechanisms leading to impaired erythropoiesis.
